Elect Tom Acker for Mesa County Commissioner
County commissioners often have more impact on our daily lives than other elected officials. Many of us believe we are not well represented by past and present Mesa County Commissioners.
Tom is motivated to elevate the discussion of this powerful three-member group of government decision-makers to promote the best interests of all community organizations and its citizens.
Please join us on Thursday, May 23, 5:30-7:00 PM to learn more about Tom's background and the issues he has
prioritized, as well as listening to your concerns and answering your questions.
Winning this election will be the result of Tom sharing his ideas with his constituents, his committed campaign team,
lots of volunteers, sufficient funds to amplify his message, and getting out the vote. We hope you will help!

Cesar Chavez Celebration
Saturday, March 30
Las Colonias Ampitheater
Cesar Chavez Day, held on March 31 each year, celebrates the legacy of one of our country's best-known labor rights activists.
Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta
Chavez was born in 1927 to a Mexican-American family who lived on a homestead in Arizona. But in the great depression, the family lost their farm and moved to California in search of work. Chavez worked as a field laborer until 1946, when he joined the Navy. After that, he married and went back to farm work. But he soon realized that with their low wages, neither he nor any of the other farmworkers would ever get ahead or own their own property. He began organizing to fight against racial and economic discrimination.

Then in 1962 Chavez joined with another prominent organizer, Dolores Huerta, to form the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the UFW -- the United Farm Workers Union. Chavez and Huerta led strikes for workers rights, including the famous California grape strike of 1965 to 1970. Chavez championed non-violent activism, and along with Huerta popularized the slogan "Si se puede," or "Yes You Can." This was later borrowed by Barack Obama, becoming "Yes We Can!" as he campaigned for President. It was President Obama who in 2014 proclaimed March 31 to be a federal holiday celebrating the achievements of Chavez and Huerta. The day is also celebrated as The Chavez-Huerta Day of Service.

Here at home, our Cesar Chavez Celebration was held on Saturday, March 30 at the Las Colonias Ampitheater, with speakers including Karen McNeill-Miller, President and CEO of the Colorado Health Foundation. There was music and dancing, and information booths including our own Mesa County Democrats, here shown with volunteers Larry Carter and Dan Lochner.
